MDP (MurNAc-L-Ala-D-isoGln, also known as muramyl dipeptide), is the minimal bioactive peptidoglycan motif common to all bacteria and the essential structure required for adjuvant activity in vaccines.
MDP is recognized by NOD2 (CARD15) a member of the family of Nod-like receptors (NLRs, also known as CATERPILLER), characterized by a nucleotide-oligomerization domain (NOD) and ligand-recognizing leucine-rich repeats.
